Academy Award-nominated "Boyz n the Hood" original script

Description

Pictured is the actual agency submitted script for "Boyz n the Hood" that was used in the early evaluation/acquisition process to bring the screenplay to Columbia Pictures. Also presented are four pages of coverage (notes), dated June 2, 1990, where the analyst assigned to the script provided a qualified recommendation of "Maybe" to acquire the 108 page script from the then 22-year-old screenwriter from South-Central, Los Angeles. "Maybe" ultimately became "Yes" and the rest is history. Released by Columbia Pictures on July 12, 1991, "Boyz n the Hood" would go on to garner widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. Singleton's final screenplay version, based largely upon the original agency draft that was circulated at Columbia Pictures, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 2002, the United States Library of Congress deemed Singleton's film "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. The decades old, agency-submitted script and the Columbia Pictures analyst's coverage are arguably among the most important artifacts to be preserved from the film and burgeoning career of the youngest person ever to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director.
