A photograph of Elmer Huter Jr. on the conning tower of the USS SILVERSIDES.
Typed letter from his son reads: "Dad on the conning tower of the U.S.S. Silversides. It was probably taken 1942, on the return of the sub from its first war patrol off the coast of Japan. Only submariners during wartime were allowed to wear beards to conserve water. Notice the bullet holes by Dads right arm. They were obtained during a deck gun battle with an armed sampan. One crewman was killed during the fighting. Dad helped pass his body down below decks to be buried later at sea."
Only one crewman was killed on the Silversides during her career. His name was Mike Harbin.Acquisition
