Lt. Shackleford, Ensign Robert Rehl, Mrs. Rehl, and Mrs. Shackleford stand together in the backyard of the Shackleford's home near San Diego, July 1945.
Earlier that summer, the Rehl's tied the knot but did not have the opportunity for a honeymoon as SLATER was scheduled to depart NYC for San Diego. SLATER's commanding officer, Lt. Cmdr. Marcel Blancq, arranged for Mrs. Rehl to travel via train to San Diego and surprise her husband. The Shackleford's offered their home for a party.
Enisgn Rehl was permitted to remain in San Diego for a few days after SLATER departed for Pearl Harbor. He later traveled to Pearl on another ship to meet SLATER.Collection
