This jagged piece of metal was donated by Vernon Rink, F1c of USS SWEARER (DE-186). On 16 April 1945, USS BOWERS (DE-637) came under heavy air attack from Japanese kamikaze planes. One succeeded in crashing into the bridge. SWEARER came alongside to land fire fighting parties and take on injured personnel. It's believed Rink was one of those fire fighters that helped extinguish the fires. It is also believed he pocketed this plane fragment while aboard the BOWERS.Collection
