Description

USS LEOPOLD (DE-319) was launched on June 12, 1943 at Orange, Texas, by Consolidated Steel Corporation. Helen Leopold, sister of Ensign Robert Leopold, was the ship's sponsor. This photograph captures the moment LEOPOLD slid down the ways and into the water for the first time. Some yard workers are visible on the bow holding on to the otherwise empty shell of the ship. As a photo postcard, there is room for a message, address, and stamp on the reverse side.
