"Dear Ms. Cone, Please excuse the delay in answering your letter. I have had quite a few letters and find it hard to answer them. Although I was a seaman on the Leopold I had plenty of talks with your son. He was a very fine officer and was lost of fun. He always treated the boys ok when ever we needed anything. I didn't not see your son during or after the action but from what some of the others said I am sure he was not hurt when we got hit. Please accept my deepest sympathy for there is not very much hope or anything I could say that would help you in anyway. Sincerely yours, William D. O'Brien"
