Name/Title

The History of Rome by Titus Livius, The First Eight Books, Literally Translated, With Notes and Translations

Description

This volume consists of an English translation of the first eight books of "The History of Rome" which was written by Titus Livius [a.k.a. Livy] between 27 and 9 BCE. According to Perplexity, "The History of Rome": "[T]races Rome’s story from its legendary origins—such as the arrival of Aeneas and the founding by Romulus and Remus—through the monarchy, the Republic, and up to Livy’s own era under Augustus. Livy’s original history comprised 142 books, but only 35 survive in full. The extant books detail the period up to 293 BC (books 1–10), and then resume for 219–166 BC (books 21–45). The narrative covers early myths, legendary monarchs, wars (including with the Sabines and the Etruscans), the social and political evolution of Rome, and, in the preserved later books, the Punic Wars and Rome’s expansion. Livy wrote with literary flair, blending legend and historical facts. The work shaped the Western understanding of early Roman values, virtues, and statecraft, even though many stories are more myth than verifiable history."
