Context

The Rite of Memphis had a short-lived, but very interesting history in the US. The author, Calvin Burt, was the leader of a Sovereign Sanctuary that had split from the Harry Seymour-led one in New York. Both Seymour and Burt posess notorious histories that are too long to describe. Suffice it to say, Burt's Rite of Memphis was based in Chicago and claimed to have preserved the original 96 degrees of the Rite following its official truncation to 33 degrees by Seymour and the Grand Orient of France (this truncation naturally raised the ire of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite). The recipient, William P. Innes, was grand secretary of the Grand Lodge of Michigan from 1878—1892. He was also a Union Army commanding officer of the First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics during the American Civil War.
