Description

This pamphlet was written by Scottish-born Gilbert Burnet (1643–1716), Bishop of Salisbury, in 1678 —four years after his famous work, _A History of the Reformation in England_. Burnet was a complex character: clergyman, historian, political and religious activist. Escaping the turmoil in Scotland, he relocated to London, where he served under Charles II. After he was banned from preaching in London by Charles’s successor, James VII / II, he left for France and then Utrecht, Holland, where he joined forces with Prince William of Orange (1650–1702). In 1688, Burnet accompanied William during his invasion of England. He was awarded the bishopric after William’s ascent to the throne in 1689.
