Description

Sword with silver and gold scabbard. The handle of the sword is shagreen wrapped with gold-toned twisted wire. The blade is stamped "G. R. Kirschbaum/Solingen" near the rain guard. On the opposite side, the mark "Henry Folsom - St. Louis - Mo." is engraved into a cartouche shaped like a shield. The scabbard is engraved with the inscription, "Capt J.L. Barstow from his Company".

Context

Owned by Captain John Lester Barstow of Company K, 8th Vermont Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Barstow went on to become Governor of Vermont (1882-1884).
