Description

Wood fragment from a flat board. The wide side of the piece is shaped like a 1. One narrow side is pasted with a paper label that reads, "[illeg] of one of the last rails that Abraham Lincoln split before he commenced to practice law." [edited for spelling]

Context

Purchased at an 1864 fair in Chicago to raise funds for Civil War hospitals, the piece was reportedly taken from a fence of a house Lincoln built in Illinois, ca. 1830.
