Description

Highly decorative gold sword and scabbard with engraved and repousse decorations. The hilt of the sword terminates in an eagle's head, and the handles is decorated with many-faceted stars or studs. One side of the handle is also decorated with a floral bouquet. The crossguard, which terminates in a ram's head, is decorated at the center with an applied oval medallion with a depiction of Hercules wrestling a lion. The scabbard is engraved with the words, ""Presented to Major General Samuel Strong, Vermont Volunteers by his Excellency Daniel D. Tompkins of the State of New York, pursuant to the Resolutions of the Senate & Assembly of the said State, to Major General Samuel Strong of the Vermont Volunteers, as a memorial of the sense entertained by the State of his services and those of his brave Mountaineers at the battle of Plattsburg, 11th Sept. 1814." flowers, and a battle scene.
