Silver pocket watch. The front of the case, which is dented, is engraved with a small shield shape with a blank interior. The back of the case is engraved with the inscription, "In the battle of Gettysburg July 3d 1863 The bullet passed through the body then striking the Watch of Lieut. P.C.J. Cheney First Vermont Cavalry." The case opens to show a mostly shattered white enamel face with only the number 7-11 (in Roman numerals) still remaining.Context
Worn by Lt. Pearly C.J. Cheney, co. C, 1st Vermont Cavalry during the Battle of Gettysburg. He was shot during the battle, and the bullet went through his body and struck the watch, causing the dent in the case.Acquisition
