1976.4.1Description
Blue cotton dress. The dress has long sleeves and a center front open. The main textile is blue cotton calico printed with an all-over repeated pattern of small red daisies, now mostly faded. The dress is heavily patched and repaired using various, mismatching textiles. The bodice is lined with white cotton, and the waist has been lowered by an inch, leaving a visible strip of the original dye colors.Context
According to family history, this dress was worn by Cornelia Augusta Wheeler in Duxbury, Vermont, while her husband, Charles E. Wheeler, fought during the Civil War. Upon his return, Charles stated that he never wanted to see the dress again (because of its poor condition), so it was packed away and thus preserved.Acquisition
