Context

Leale Towsley was born and raised in Manchester, Vermont. He attended Burr and Burton Seminary and worked in Manchester until enlisting in the Army for WWI. Upon discharge he returned to Manchester, but soon left for California to study art. He visited Manchester frequently and was a member of Southern Vermont Artists. He returned to Vermont permanently in 1950 when he took residence at the Vermont Soldier's Home in Bennington.
