Embroidered counterpane. The body of the counterpane is a white-and-blue wool blanket woven in a "windowpane" plaid check. Each "pane" (white square) is embroidered is crewel embroidered with blue wool yarn in dark blue, light blue, and white. The embroidered patterns are repeated often, but there is no consistency in the repeat. Imagery includes hearts, tulips, pineapples, flowers, and wreaths. The fabric is two 36" panels (full selvedge width) sewn together at the center. There is a light-blue applied hand-woven fringe on three sides.Context
Made by Elizabeth Meigs Chittenden for her daughter, Betsy Chittenden Hill, who lived in Charlotte, Vermont. According to family history, the wool was from sheep raised on Governor Thomas Chittenden's farm in Williston, and the yarns were spun by Elizabeth Meigs Chittenden.Acquisition
