Description

Alphabet sampler stitched on undyed linen with black, brown, blue, and green thread in cross stitches and eyelet stitches. The top has a border of diamonds above a horizontal curvilinear line. A capital marking alphabet with the & symbol at the end is the first line, followed by a lower-case marking alphabet along the second line. Then there is a decorative border. Beneath the border are two more alphabets: script capitals, and eyelet marking capitals. Then, approximately at the center, is the inscription, "Carolin A Russell's Sampler Aged 8" followed by "DR . TR . WGRDLRPGRTER / HAR / CAR / MFR / CAR" and the verse, "When we've been there then thousand years/ Bright shining as the sun/ Weve [sic] no less days to sign Gods praise/ Than when we first begun". The name "Mary Chase" is in the lower corners.
