Context

Taken from the Steamer Vermont, which operated between Whitehall, New York, and St. Johns, Canada, from 1809 to 1815. It was the second commercially operated steamboat in the world. In 1815, it sunk in the Richelieu River, and was partially raised in 1934 through the efforts of Daniel Loomis. This piece was likely recovered during the raising.
