Linen sampler with floral border, pictorial elements on the bottom, and multiple alphabets. Along the top edge is the inscription: "Executed/ Mary Gibson aged 10, 1832." The border is a variation on the strawberry vine, stitched in blue, brown, green, red, and yellow. The top alphabet is an uppercase Italianate script in green cross stitch. The second alphabet is capitalized marking stitches in green cross stitch, followed by a lowercase marking script in green cross stitches with numbers up to ten. Followed by numbers up to eight in green box stitch. The third alphabet is Germanic marking stitches in green eyelet stitches. The images on the bottom of the sampler depict a church, trees, a woman, flowers, a strawberry plant, a bouquet in a basket, and a small building in cross stitches (the woman is embroidered). It was previously mounted but removed. The red, brown, light green, and blue threads are wool. The dark green and one of the tan colors are silk.Context
