Description

Metal nose guard with canvas head strap. The guard is shaped like a nose and has a large, triangular opening at the center bottom. One of the sides is carved with the initials, "F.P."

Used to save noses from being broken in early football games.

Context

Owned by Frank Putnam of Bethel, Vermont. While these nose guards were made for use in football, Putname may have used it as a gunner during World War I.
