Description

Soft-bodied doll with white porcelain arms and legs and a painted bisque head. She is wearing a yellow dress and bloomers printed with small pink flowers. The dress is trimmed at the waist and hem with black velvet. She has blonde hair sewn to a silk cap to for a wig (now detached) and a brimmed hat that matches the dress. She is wearing low-heeled boots. She has closing eyes (no longer functional).

Context

Owned by Hattie Jane Dyer Weeks (1859 - 1942) of Middlebury, Vermont, wife of the donor. She named the doll Nelly Gray, likely after the anti-slavery ballad of the same name.
