Description

This wallet is made of brown calfskin leather. Inside the wallet, there are several items: 10 unused 3-cent postage stamps; 1 canceled 3-cent postage stamp; 2 pennies (1863, 1860); a paper strip holding several straight pins; a foil wrapper printed in blue with a label related to banking, dated 1859; a newspaper clipping about the Battle of Gettysburg; a large $5 postage bill.

Context

Carried by Smith Ormsbee of Montpelier, Vermont, during the Civil War. The wallet and its contents were on Ormsbee when he was killed in Charlestown, Virginia.
