Sign, 19th century St. Johnsbury, VT Tin, paint The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans who served in Union forces during the American Civil War. This sign came with collections from the George Chamberlain Post No. 1 of St. Johnsbury, VT; founded in 1868 and named for Lieut. Col. George Chamberlain of the 11th Vermont Regiment who died of wounds he received in battle at Charlestown, Virginia, on August 21, 1864. The last recorded meeting of the Chamberlain Post was on June 8, 1940. The Assistant Adjutant General position was a departmental officer who held administrative duties for the post.
