Corn Mortar

Name/Title

Corn Mortar

Entry/Object ID

L2024.3.172

Description

Wooden corn mortar. The mortar is carved from a tree trunk with a concave "bowl" at one end.

Context

This very well preserved “corn pounder” mortar was found in a barn in Vergennes, Vermont. The antique dealer who Frederick Wiseman bought it from had cleaned and put a preservative finish on it. The original owner had no information on it other than it had set in the barn as long as he had lived on the property, which would put living memory back to the 1940’s. It is the only documented example of an hourglass style Native American mortar from the entire Northern New England area.
