Description

Framed, handwritten birth information of Harriot Smalley. The certificate consists of the name Harriot Smalley written in large copperplate letters, filled in with a checkered patter. The last letter of Smalley is placed between the two words. Her birth details are written in script beneath. The designed is framed by a checkered pattern at the top and bottom and a chevron or X pattern on the sides. The certificate is held in a black-painted wooden frame, decorated with rivet-type nails. A note on the back of the frame reads, "This frame was made by uncle Osange Smalley (brother of Harriot) when he was only five years old. The pen work was by a schollar [sic] of here while she was teaching in Brandon Vt. D. A. G."
