Round yellow button with an illustration of a clean-shaven man holding a razor and a woman touching his shoulder with the inscription, "SHAVING PERMIT BARRE HERITAGE FESTIVAL JULY 18-25 1970."Context
Produced for Barre Ethnic Heritage Festival, Barre, Vermont, 1970
This could have been a button on sale as a fundraiser for men who chose to remain clean shaven rather than grow their beards for the celebration and compete as a "brother of the brush." In this period (1960s-70s) having beard-growing "brothers of the brush" contests was common for community anniversary celebrations. The idea was to look like men did at the founding. "Sisters of the swish" was for women and the swish referred to the swish of long skirts.Acquisition
