Description

A round, pink-and-white button showing two men shaking hands. The top half of the button shows two men and "BROTHER of the BRUSH" written in red. The man on the left has white hair and a full beard and is wearing a grey suit. The man on the right has black hair and a small chin beard and is wearing a red-and-white striped suit. The bottom half of the pin is pink with "BARRE HERITAGE / FESTIVAL / JULY 18-25 / 1970" written in black.

Context

Produced to commemorate a group of men who grew beards during the Barre Ethnic Heritage Festival in 1970. In this period (1960s-70s) having beard-growing "brothers of the brush" contests was common for community anniversary celebrations. The idea was to look like men did at the founding. "Sisters of the swish" was for women and the swish referred to the swish of long skirts.
