Powder horn made from an animal horn. The narrow end is carved with a lip and the tip is cut off, showing a hollow center. The wide end is plugged with wood held on and decorated with brass brads. The horn is scratch carved throughout with disparate designs, including a vase of flowers, a sapling under the sun, a compass, cattails, a person in a canoe, a powder horn, a shot pouch, a man smoking a pipe, a bird, a firing gun, the initials "H.S." and T.S.", and the year 1849.Context
Said to have been used by Captain Samuel Hand during the War of 1812, but the initials and date disprove the history.Acquisition
