Description

Commemorative medal consisting of a bar, a ribbon, and a medallion. The bar is copper and is molded with the word, "WELCOME". The grosgrain ribbon is striped yellow (center) and blue (edges). The medallion hangs from an eye rings looped through the ribbon and has a copper laurel wreath frame around a gold token. The token shows the bust of Admiral Dewey with the label, "ADMIRAL GEO. W. DEWEY / HERO OF MANILA". The back of the token shows a war ship with the label, "DEWEY'S FLAG-SHIP OLYMPIA 5,800 TONS".

Context

This is one of the many commemorative coins and badges produced for celebrations of Admiral George Dewey, a native son of Vermont, who became an American hero after he destroyed the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay during the Spanish American War.
