Description

Powder horn made from a steer's horn. The horn is blocked at the wide end with a wooden peg covered in leather. The narrow end is black and has a cap. One side is carved with a coat of arms showing three steers' heads and a chevron. Above the shield is a crest consisting of an upraised arm holding a sort. Beneath the coat of arms is the inscription, "Samuel C. Crafts 1791"

Context

Owned by Samuel C. Crafts, 12th Governor of Vermont. The horn is engraved with the year 1791, which is the year Crafts moved from Connecticut to Vermont.
