Description

Enameled medal in the shape of a Maltese cross hanging from a red, white, and blue striped grosgrain ribbon. The arms of the cross are enameled white lined with blue and there is a red circle in the center with a gold spread eagle surrounded by the inscription, "LEX RECIT ARMA TUENTUR". The back of the medal has a fasces in place of the eagle, and the inscription, "M.O. LOYAL LEGION U.S. MDCCCLXV".

Context

Worn by Charles F. Branch to indicate his membership in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), a fraternal organization for military officers who fought for the Union army during the Civil War.
