Clinton Erwin Catto was born in Barre, Vermont, on December 18, 1911, the third child
of Catherine Pratt Catto and William E. Catto (1865-1918), both natives of Aberdeen, Scotland.
Clinton’s father was a granite worker who died at age 50 of silicosis; his mother took in boarders
to support herself.
Mr. Catto worked for the Granite Mutual Insurance Co., of Barre as an inspector and
underwriter for six years before enlisting in the U.S. Army on January 31, 1944, at age 32. He
served in the 3256th Signal Service Company as a Clerk Typist with the rank of Sergeant. He was
discharged on January 12, 1946.
After the war, Mr. Catto returned to work at Granite Mutual and eventually became its
president. He retired as president in 1987 but continued to serve as chairman of the board until
1994. He also served as a director of the Champlain Casualty Company of Vermont and was its
first president, serving from 1987 until 1990.
Clinton E. Catto married Christyne Johnson on September 18, 1933. They had three
daughters and one son. Mr. Catto died on October 23, 1995.Acquisition
