Description

Full-length navy overcoat. The heavy wool overcoat opens down the center front, and has a circular flap from the neckline to the elbow. Instead of sleeves, the coat has side slits that open beneath the upper flap. The wide falling collar is black velvet.

Context

Worn by Capt. John Barrett of Grafton, VT to deliver the State of Vermont's electoral votes to Washington DC during the 1840 election of William Henry Harrison.
