Campaign Pin, 1925 Metal, silk Gift of Harold G. Rugg, 1955.25 Vermonter Calvin Coolidge became President of the United States in 1923 when President Warren G. Harding died while in office. He ran in his own right in 1925 against Democrat John W. Davis and Progressive Robert LaFollette. His slogan, "Keep Cool and Keep Coolidge" promised stability and continuity. He won handily with 54 percent of the popular vote and 382 electoral votes. Though Coolidge had spent most of his political career in Massachusetts -- serving in a variety of political offices including Governor -- his base of support in Vermont was strong and he won his home state with 78 percent of the vote. This pin speaks to that local pride, explicitly identifying Coolidge as a Vermonter and urging the reader to "elect him again."
