Description

Small metal stencil. The middle is stamped with the inscription, "Farmer's Hotel, S.N.FISK, Proprietor. MAIN, ST. Montpelier, Vt." The stamp goes all the through the metal and is surrounded by an oval frame of small, round holes. At the top is the engraved label, "E.M. RAWSON".

Used to mark goods owned by the Farmer's Hotel in Montpelier, Vermont.

Context

Seymour N. Fisk opened the Farmer's Hotel in 1858 on the site of a former hotel known as the Shepherd's Stand. He auctioned the business in 1863, shortly before joining the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. While the hotel was only open for a short time, the property was locally known as "the old Farmer's Hotel" for decades afterward.
