Seymour N. Fisk opened the Farmer's Hotel in 1858 on the site of a former hotel known as the Shepherd's Stand. He auctioned the business in 1863, shortly before joining the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. While the hotel was only open for a short time, the property was locally known as "the old Farmer's Hotel" for decades afterward.Acquisition
