Nazi flag. The flag has a red ground with a central black swastika on a white medallion. In the upper left corner is an angular eagle holding a medallion with a swastika in its talons.

Context

Collected by Major Paul V. Fahey of Montpelier, Vermont, during his service in Limbach, Germany during World War II. In 1945, Fahey sent the flag to Governor Mortimer Proctor to serve as a reminder of "all the Vermont men who fought to get this far, but died or were killed on the way." Upon receipt, the flag was displayed for a week in the window of J. O. Goodrich's furniture store in Montpelier, Vermont, along with a copy of Fahey's explanatory letter.
