Doll with wooden bust and legs and soft linen body. The bust is plastered and painted with glossy, peach-colored skin, red lips, and pink cheeks. The eyes are carved and enameled in white and black. Black dots are painted around the eyes to simulate eyelashes, and along the eyebrows. The hair is silk and cut into a straight bob with short bangs (not original). There is a black string tied around the doll's neck. The doll is wearing a dress made of white gauze with a wove, repeating diamond pattern. The upper sleeves are gathered into puffs, and there is a plaid silk ribbon at the waistline. Linen arms protrude from the sleeves, but the wooden lower arms are no longer present. Beneath the dress, the doll is wearing two petticoats and pantalets in white gauze, and brown leather shoes with tied fronts. The legs are made of unpainted wood. The doll is accompanied by a white cotton muslin cloak decorated with whitework embroidery and crocheted trim.Context
Owned by Julia Ann Smith in Thompson Ridge or Bullville, New York. While the doll was not made or used in Vermont, it was used to represent Vermont at a Temple University doll show held during the 1920s.Acquisition
