Alphabet sampler on loosely woven linen. The sampler consists of three complete alphabets (fancy capitals, marking capitals, and marking lower-case letters) and the numbers 1-10 followed by the inscription, "Julia P. Dewey Berlin Aged 9 Years August" and the verse, "Juses permit they gracious name to stand/ As the ^first cross of an infants hand as move/ And while her fingers oer this canv/ Engage her tender heart to see thy love/ With they dear children let her share aPart/ And write they name thyself upon her heart". Beneath the inscriptions is the large word, "BEAUTY" stitched in eyelet stitches with a decorative vine beneath. There is a faux Chinese symbol in the lower right corner in black.Context
