Description

White cardboard box with a yellow paper label that reads, "DR. HENRY BAXTER'S Anti-Bilious and Jaundice MANDRAKE BITTERS TABLET", with directions for use, supplier information, and price. The box is open at both ends with an interior box that slides open. The box originally contained red-coated black tablets, now removed. A paper insert contained with the tablets has an advertisement for the supplies, Burlington Drug Co., as well as instructions for taking three of their products.

Use

Mandrake bitters were used as a cure for several ailments but were specifically recommended as a laxative. Mandrake is no longer used medicinally as it is toxic. One of the earliest symptoms of mandrake poisoning is diarrhea, making them an effective laxative.
