Commemorative medal consisting of two cast portions connected with eye rings. The top portion shows two swans, each with an outstretched wing, oriented around two curved swords. The right sword says "RUTLAND VT." and the left sword says "LOUISVILLE KY." The second portion is a round medallion framed on the bottom and right with a crescent moon and the word "CAIRO". Filling out the rest of the circle is a scene of two indigenous American men wearing war feathers and paddling a canoe in a body of water. The date 1609 is on the bow of the canoe. A man in 16th-century European clothing is standing on a rock to the left and dramatically pointing to the right with a sword. A head wearing a pharaoh's crown is at the center top above the date 1909.
The medal is attached to a piece of light cardboard that reads, "The scene depicted on this badge represent Samuel de Champlain early in July, 1609, discovering the beautiful body of clear what to which he gave the name ‘Lake Champlain.” This body of water is overlooked by the high and lofty peaks of the Green Mts. of Vermont.
