Description

The kit, made from leather, unrolls. The name "L. H. Bostwick" and the words "Jericho, Vt." are printed in gold on the outside of the kit. There is a large pocket made from red and black checkered silk, then two smaller pockets made from the same material. Below that is a pad made from the leather into which dozens of pins have been stuck, pointing inward so as not to prick. Three small pieces of cloth, two red and one white are sewn to the front of the pad and hold needles and safety pins. At the bottom is a large pocket formed from the leather material that contains small rolls of white cloth tied with thread, a supply of thread wound around cardboard, a thimble and a hard chunk of some unidentified material -- maybe beeswax.

Context

Made by Mary Bostwick of Jericho, Vermont, for her brother, Captain Lucius Bostwick to carry with him when he departed Vermont to join the Union Army during the Civil War.
