Large, stamped metal hat badge in the shape of a radiating the star. The central circle is black with the number 1 in gold. Surround the the central circle is the inscription, "RUTLAND.LIGHT.GUARD 1858". The reverse has a hollow tube at the center like a plume holder, and a sharp metal pin bent inward on the left side.Context
The Rutland Light Guard, a state uniformed militia, was organized on Nov. 13, 1858 as a state, uniformed militia. William Young Warren Ripley became its captain in 1859. When Ripley became the first Vermonter to officially volunteer for the Union Army, his speech about his decision at the Rutland Town Hall inspired the Light Guard to volunteer as Company K of the 1st Regiment of Vermont Volunteers in May of 1861.Acquisition
