Description

Large bag of cut-pile wool-tufted canvas with a large-format floral pattern. The bag opens at the top with an interior wooden frame that hinges on either side and latches close in the center. Over the latch on the front of the bag is a metal escutcheon with a keyhole. Two short leather handles are at the center of the opening. A metal key is tied to one of the handles. The interior of the bag is lined with glazed, plain-woven white cotton. The inscription, "CC Upham" is painted on the base.

Used by Charles C. Upham of Montpelier, VT, Paymaster of the US Navy during the Civil War.
