Founded in 1996 by Ian Dowling and Russ Fitzpatrick, The Gold Dome Brewing Company operated out of an old granite shed on Pioneer Street in Montpelier. The microbrewery's primary beer, the Ceres Back 40 Amber Ale, was a Vermont-style amber ale described as "nutty and slightly sweet ... balanced with clean hop bitterness and a subtle hint of citrus." The donor of growler received it as a benefit for owning three shares of stock in the young company. Golden Dome had a short, tumultuous history and ultimately closed permanently in 1999.
