Description

Bicorne military hat. The hat is decorated with a black-and-gold ribbon placed diagonally across the high side and secured at the center rim with a large brass button molded with an anchor. The ribbon is holding a round black cockade. There are black and gold tassels placed on the brim at both short sides. The interior of the hat is lined with silk satin and bears a silver printed label that reads, "WM. H. HORSTMANN COMPANY TRADE MARK PHILADELPHIA". The hat is accompanied by a tin case shaped to fit the hat. The interior of the case is lightly painted. There is a metal label on the exterior of the case that reads, "OEHM & CO. ARMY & NAVY OUTFITTERS BALTIMORE, MD."

Part of a uniform from the US Revenue Service, which later became the US Coast Guard.

Owned by Lieutenant Colonel Roswell Farnham of Bradford, Vermont, during the Civil War.
