Description

Binoculars and carrying case. The binoculars consist of two looking glasses attached at the center along a hinge point. The grips are covered in black leather. The carrying case is made of brown leather and consists of a base shaped to fit the binoculars, an oval lid that hinges off with a leather strap hinge, and a long leather shoulder strap. The lid is marked with the label, "J.W.CLARK, Q.M./SIXTH VT. REG."

Context

Owned by John Wesley Clark of the 6th Vermont at the beginning of the Civil War. At some point during the war, he gave them to Elisha Barney, also of the 6th Vermont, who used them until his death after the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864.
