Description

Pair of ice skates, each consisting of a wooden sole, iron blade, and leather straps. The sole is shaped like the bottom of a straight-cut shoe. The blade is attached along the center bottom of the sole and extends past the toe to curl up over the foot. The top of curl is flattened and rounded. There are two nails at the toe and center foot attaching the blade to the sole. There is a screw at the center heel with the point oriented upward. There are two rectangular slits in the sole to accommodate leather straps (still present). The blade is wide with a flat, rather than sharpened, edge.

Context

Said to have been made by Solon Briggs in his blacksmith shop at Union Village Thetford, Vermont, for Sheridan I. Smith, who worked at the blacksmith shop manning the bellows and doing light chores in payment for the skates.
