Description

Horizontal grey patch with green winged skis and gold outlining of feathers and skis. Underneath the skis is the inscription, "BRATTLEBORO" in gold italicized embroidered lettering.

Context

The winged skis are intended to evoke the swiftness of Mercury while skiing. Worn by Herbert P. Holbrook who was a class A ski jumper and olympic cross-country skier. He was an alumnus of the Austine School for the Deaf, and admitted to the AAAD (American Athletic Association for the Deaf) in 1964, when he also made the New York Times News twice that year. He competed in Berchtesgaden (West Germany) in the 60's and in the Meribel Olympics in France in 1979.

Notes

Was definitely a patch once attached to a garment. The gray refers to the background which may have been the original fabric of the patch or the fabric itself of the garment carefully cut out. The green is the body of the overstitching creating the image with its golden outlines stitched not top of this. The same golden/yellow is used also in massively machine top-stitching to create the word beneath.
