Bonnet

Name/Title

Bonnet

Entry/Object ID

1953.15.5

Description

The sunbonnet has a straw brim and crown, which are woven in two shades of brown, giving it a dotted appearance. The brim is wide and is designed to shade the wearer's face from the sun. The crown of the bonnet is shallow, providing minimal room for hair. The edge of the brim and the seam with the crown are decorated with a brown gauze ruffle. The bonnet also has a wool gauze tail that hangs down to the wearer's shoulders, providing additional protection from the sun for the neck. To keep the bonnet in place, there are two brown taffeta ribbons that can be tied beneath the wearer's chin.
