Small commemorative medal medal with a red, white, and blue striped ribbon tied to the top. One side of the medal is cast with an image of a two-story building with the inscription, "FIRST SCHOOL IN THE UNITED STATES / FOR TRAINING OF TEACHERS". The other side is cast with a tall torch in a laurel wreath between the dates 1823 and 1923. At the center is the inscription, "100th ANNIVERSARY, OF THE FOUNDING OF THE FIRST NORMAL SCHOOL IN AMERICA CONCORD, VERMONT".Context
In August of 1923, Vermont celebrated the centennial of Samuel Read Hall’s founding of the first “normal” or teacher training school in the United States. It was located in Concord Corners, Vermont. The centennial celebration included a pageant and placement of a marker at the site of the original school building. Educators from throughout New England attended.Acquisition
